Frequently Asked Questions

What grade do I need to climb before learning to lead?

We recommend that you can confidently climb F6a on a top rope without needing to rest or be pulled up on the rope. This helps ensure you can focus on learning new lead climbing skills, rather than worrying about the difficulty of the climbing itself.

Do I need my own climbing partner?

Yes. Our Indoor Lead Climbing Course is designed for pairs, so you'll need to book with a climbing partner.

Don't have a partner? Get in touch and we'll do our best to match you with another climber on the course.

Is all equipment included?

Yes. We provide all the equipment you need for the course.

If you already own a harness or belay device and would prefer to use it, you're welcome to bring it along.

Will I be able to lead climb independently afterwards?

Most participants finish the course with the skills and confidence to lead climb independently at indoor climbing centres.

If you need a little more practice with any part of the course, we can arrange additional coaching sessions to help build your confidence before you climb independently.

Can I use an assisted braking belay device?

Yes. If you normally climb with an assisted-braking belay device, such as a Petzl Gri-gri or Neox, we'll teach you how to lead belay safely using that device.

Is this course recognised by climbing centres?

Yes. The skills you learn are recognised throughout the UK climbing community.

Most climbing centres will still ask you to complete a belay competency check or self-certification before you climb independently. This is standard practice and simply allows each centre to confirm that you can climb and belay safely.
